What other people are doing

In some of the world's great cities, municipal efforts (be sure check all the links in that article) and people try to inspire us to pedal. Closer to home, the local daily tells us how foolhardy and dangerous such an approach can be. No doubt there's risk — and risk here — in cycling but if I let that paralyze me before I hit the road I might as well not get out of bed in the morning.

I was just in Portland. That city has it down on how to treat two wheeled commuters. For example, the bike lanes get wider and are painted green at intersections so cars can't cut you off when they're trying to turn right. And there are bike lanes on almost every street. That's how you keep bikers safe and reduce cars.

You are right on, dork. I can leave my office building and be struck by a car or bus crossing the street. I follow all traffic rules and don't take stupid chances, but refuse to be afraid to live my life. I love riding my bike.

In my nabe (Decatur, GA), we're lucky enough to have a bike shop owner as a city councillor. The city, tiny as it is, is planning on installing bike lanes throughout the city (and sidewalks on every road) by, I think, 2015. Oh, and an adult rides through the south of town every morning making stops to pick up kids in a 'bike train' and then leading them all to the local elementary school.
